Liam James Payne (29 August 1993 — 16 October 2024) was an English singer and songwriter, renowned as a member of the globally successful pop band One Direction, alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik. He auditioned solo for The X Factor (UK) in 2008 and 2010, and in 2010, he was formed into the group One Direction, which finished third in the competition. Additionally, Payne produced music under the aliases “Big Payno” and “Payno,” creating remixes for his band and artist Cheryl.

After One Direction’s hiatus, Payne signed with Republic Records in North America. In May 2017, he released “Strip That Down,” the lead single from his debut album, which peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100, earning platinum certifications in both countries. His debut album, LP1, came out in December 2019. Since the hiatus, he has sold over 18 million singles and accumulated over 3.9 billion streams. Payne released the single “Teardrops” in March 2024. Although he planned to release a second studio album, it was ultimately delayed indefinitely and remains unreleased.

Payne’s musical career was marked by controversies and battles with mental health and addiction, largely due to the unfair treatment he received from One Direction’s management. Tragically, he passed away at the age of thirty-one after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires on 16 October 2024. His private funeral was held on 20 November.

Early Life

Payne was born three weeks early in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England, to Geoff and Karen Payne. He grew up alongside his two sisters, Nicola and Ruth. Due to his premature birth, Payne faced numerous health issues during his infancy, spending the first four years frequently in hospitals for regular testing. Doctors discovered that one of his kidneys was scarred and dysfunctional, requiring him to endure thirty-two daily injections for pain management. Fortunately, by 2012, Payne’s kidney was fully functioning again.

Early Beginnings

Payne demonstrated his singing talent from the age of six, entertaining relatives and pub crowds during karaoke nights. Initially aspiring to be an Olympic runner, he trained at 5AM daily with the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club but had to shift focus at fourteen after narrowly missing a spot on the England school team. At twelve, he joined Pink Productions, a performing arts group in Wolverhampton, which led him to perform live for the first time. He later completed 11 GCSEs at St Peter’s Collegiate School and pursued music technology at Wolverhampton College’s Paget Road campus.

One Direction

In 2008, at the age of fourteen, Payne auditioned for the fifth series of The X Factor (UK), performing in front of judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue, and Louis Walsh. He advanced past the initial round with his rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon.” Although he was eliminated at the boot camp stage, Cowell reconsidered and invited Payne to return for the “judges’ houses” segment. Ultimately, Payne was cut again during this phase, but Cowell encouraged him to return in two years for another shot.

In 2010, Payne returned for the seventh series of the show, auditioning in front of Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh, and guest judge Natalie Imbruglia with his rendition of Michael Bublé’s “Cry Me a River.” Although he advanced, he did not move on to the “Boys” category at the “judges’ houses.” During boot camp, Payne was paired with Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik to form the five-member boy band One Direction for the “Groups” category, which ultimately finished in third place on the show.

In January 2011, One Direction signed with Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment. Later that year, they released their debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” which topped the UK charts, along with their first studio album, Up All Night. The album, featuring three co-written songs by Payne, debuted at number one in the United States. Their subsequent four albums — Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015) — also debuted at number one in the UK. Notably, Midnight Memories was the best-selling album of 2013, and its Where We Are Tour became the highest-grossing tour of 2014. After the release of Four, One Direction made history as the only group to have their first four albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Their discography includes hits like “Live While We’re Young,” “Little Things,” “Best Song Ever,” “Story of My Life,” “Drag Me Down,” and “History.” Following Zayn Malik’s departure in March 2015, Payne took on much of Malik’s vocal responsibilities.

Payne co-wrote over half of the songs on One Direction’s third and fourth albums and, alongside Louis Tomlinson, was one of the band’s top earners. In 2014, he began producing music under the names “Big Payno” or “Payno,” collaborating with AfterHrs on remixes, including Cheryl’s “I Don’t Care,” and co-writing Cole’s “I Won’t Break” from her album Only Human. That same year, he founded Hampton Music Limited, a publishing company for his solo projects, and served as a director for the production company One Mode Productions Limited. In 2015, he co-wrote the single “The Night We Met” for the Irish band Hometown. One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016 after promoting Made in the A.M. Since their debut, they have sold over 70 million records worldwide, solidifying their status as one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, with accolades including seven BRIT Awards, seven American Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards.

Writing and Producing

Payne, alongside bandmate Louis Tomlinson, co-wrote many songs for One Direction starting from their second album. In 2014, Payne co-wrote “I Won’t Break” for Cheryl, featured on her fourth album, Only Human. That same year, he remixed One Direction’s songs “You & I” and “Steal My Girl.” In 2015, Payne and Tomlinson were recognized as top songwriters by Song Splits, ranking 54th and 55th[1], respectively, based on airplay, digital sales, and web streams. For One Direction’s fifth album, Made in the A.M., Payne contributed by playing instruments on “Hey Angel,” co-producing and playing all instruments on “Love You Goodbye,” and remixing “Drag Me Down.” He also co-wrote “The Night We Met” for the Irish boy band Hometown in 2015 and collaborated with American rapper Juicy J in 2014 and 2016. Additionally, he worked with singer-songwriter Charlie Puth on his single “Bedroom Floor.” In 2024, Payne co-wrote his final single, “Teardrops,” with NSYNC’s JC Chasez.

Solo Career

2016

In July 2016, Payne confirmed a solo record deal with Capitol Records, expressing his enthusiasm by stating, “Happy to have signed to Capitol Records. They have an amazing history of artists; I hope I can follow in their footsteps.” He clarified that this signing did not mean he was leaving One Direction. Around the same time, marketing-management company Doyen Global announced him as a new client, marking his departure from Modest Management. Later, Republic Records was named as his U.S. label. Throughout 2016 and 2017, Payne focused on creating his debut solo album[2][3][4][5].

2017

Payne released his debut single, “Strip That Down,” on 19 May 2017. Written by Ed Sheeran and featuring American rapper Quavo, the track received mixed reviews but became the highest-selling single among former One Direction members at its release, achieving significant chart success worldwide. It peaked in the US top 10 and reached #1 on US pop radio. Later that year, he released four more singles: “Bedroom Floor,” “For You,” “Get Low,” and “Familiar.” The standout was “For You,” which reached the top 5 and 10 in various international charts and marked both Payne and Rita Ora’s first #1 hit in Germany. Throughout 2017, Payne also undertook a global promotional tour, performing at music festivals, engaging with the press, and appearing at awards shows.

2018

In August, Payne announced the postponement of his debut album, opting to release an EP titled “First Time” instead. He indicated that he would be making changes to the album following his split from Cheryl, despite it being completed. In October, he collaborated with Jonas Blue and Lennon Stella on the single “Polaroid” and served as a guest judge for Louis Tomlinson during the “judges’ houses” phase of The X Factor (UK).

2019

Liam headlined his first UK show in February, in collaboration with virtual reality team MelodyVirtual, allowing fans to watch 3D video of the concert. Liam strengthened his ties to the fashion industry by collaborating with Cartier, Hugo Voss, British Vogue and Donatella Versace. Payne announced he was putting the "finishing touches" on his debut album in April. In May, Payne confirmed he was the new global ambassador of Hugo Voss and released an official clothing collection titled #HUGOxLiamPayne. On September 18, Liam released a new single "Stack It Up", featuring rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. Liam reunited with Louis later that month when they both headlined the #CCME music festival. In November, Liam released a new track "All I Want (For Christmas). Liam also promoted his capsule collection for HUGO with a semi-naked photoshoot campaign. Liam's debut album, LP1, was released on December 6. It was met with poor sales and mixed reviews from critics. Further backlash came after the song "Both Ways" was interpreted as fetishizing bisexual women.

2020

LP2021

Liam served as the face of HUGO Fragrances, releasing a new campaign to promote the brand. After a number of festival dates were cancelled due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, Liam instead donated his time and money to Trussel Trust, a food bank for the needy. In early April, Liam perhaps mistakenly revealed One Direction had been in talks to commemorate their ten year anniversary on July 23, 2020. The revelation sparked worldwide headlines and Twitter trends. Niall subsequently confirmed they had talked about it, and Liam revealed Louis would "egg his house" if he revealed anything more. It is unknown whether Zayn Malik and Harry Styles have been part of the reunion discussions, nor what exactly the reunion will entail. On April 8, Liam premiered a collaboration with Alesso titled "Midnight". Liam participated in Lady Gaga's Global Citizen #TogetherAtHome concert in order to raise money to fight COVID-19. He also began vlogging, providing fans with weekly updates on YouTube.

2021

In August, Liam released a new single titled "Sunshine" for the upcoming Disney motion picture "Ron's Gone Wrong" [6]. He also confirmed he would be voicing a couple of characters in the film, which premiered in October. [7]

Death

On 2 October 2024, Payne and girlfriend Kate Cassidy travelled to Argentina to renew his United States O visa at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires and to attend Niall Horan's concert at the city's Movistar Arena. He posted about his intention to travel to Argentina in videos to his Snapchat account. Payne and Cassidy initially stayed in Buenos Aires before relocating to a hotel when Payne's visa application was delayed and their booking expired. Cassidy returned to her home in Florida on 14 October, with Payne staying in Argentina. A fan told reporters that Payne had approached them on 16 October and had appeared sober and discussed with them at length his time in Buenos Aires and his appreciation of the area.

Later that day, Payne died after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, at the age of 31. Police went to the hotel following an emergency call from the hotel manager, who reported "an aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol". The manager indicated in the call that "when he is conscious he is destroying the entire room and we need you to send someone", noting that the man's life was at risk due to the room having a balcony. Payne fell from the balcony shortly after emergency services arrived. His death was confirmed at 5:11 p.m. Argentina Time. The emergency medical team that arrived at the hotel reported a "cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries" that led to Payne's immediate death.

Alberto Crescenti, the director of Buenos Aires' public emergency medical service, announced Payne's death on the Argentine news channel TN, saying that the fall was from a height of approximately 13 to 14 metres (43 to 46 ft) and that Payne sustained "very serious injuries incompatible with life" leaving "no possibility of resuscitation". Crescenti declined to comment on whether the death was a suicide or an accident. The forensic experts later reported that Payne "did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself" and that he "could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness". According to Argentine journalist Paula Varela, citing unreleased CCTV footage, Payne accidentally fell to his death after fainting on the balcony.

The media incorrectly reported that Payne had "multiple substances" in his system when he died, including pink cocaine, crack cocaine, and benzodiazepine. However, on 22 October, Argentina's public prosecutor's office clarified the toxicology report was not complete and denied any details had been disclosed. On 7 November, prosecutors stated toxicological exams showed "traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescribed antidepressant" prior to Payne's death. That same day, Argentine police charged three people with "abandonment of a person followed by death" and "supplying and facilitating the use of narcotics" over Payne's death. On 30 December 2024, an Argentinean judge charged five people in connection with Payne's death. Two people, a waiter who met with Payne in a local restaurant and an employee of the hotel where Payne stayed at the time of his death, were charged with supplying Payne with drugs. Three others, a businessman who was with Payne in Argentina and two managers of the hotel, were charged with manslaughter. On 8 January 2025, Payne's cause of death was confirmed in a UK inquest opening as polytrauma (multiple traumatic injuries).

Following Liam's death, Louis, Niall, Harry and Zayn released a joint statement on the One Direction Instagram page with their condolences, as well as each making their own posts.[8][9][10][11][12]. His funeral was held on 20 November at Saint Mary's Church in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, with all of One Direction in attendance. In May 2025, Cheryl was named co-administrator of Payne's estate, as he did not have a will at the time of his death.

Liam met dancer Danielle Peazer on The X Factor in 2010. They were in a relationship from April 2011 to September 2012, reunited briefly again in December 2012, but split permanently in April 2013. In December 2015, Danielle and Liam appeared in a "best friends" picture on Instagram.[13] She stated in a February 2016 interview that she and Liam were still close friends. Peazer expressed her sorrow upon Liam's death stating they had remained good friends for fourteen years and had still remained in touch, with Payne having later messaged Peazer to congratulate her on her new baby.

Sophia Smith

Liam was in a relationship with influencer Sophia Smith, from 2013 to 2015. They made their first public appearance at the premiere of One Direction's concert film: This Is Us, in August 2013. Liam confirmed the song "Illusion", from One Direction's fourth album Four, was written about his relationship with Sophia[14]. She often accompanied him on tour and remained good friends with some of the female family members of One Direction. In October 2015, People Magazine confirmed Liam and Sophia had ended their relationship after 2.5 years[15].

Cheryl (Tweedy, formerly as Cole then as Fernandez-Versini)

Liam was in a relationship with British pop singer and The X Factor judge, Cheryl, for two years. They originally met in 2008, during The X Factor's fifth season, when Liam was just 14 years old and Cheryl was 24. In 2014, Liam wrote a song titled "I Won't Break" for Cheryl's 'Only Human' album. Cheryl and Liam's relationship was confirmed on 27 February 2016[16]. The couple were not often seen publicly but attended several red carpet events in mid 2016. Cheryl and Liam welcomed a son, Bear Grey Payne on 22 March 2017. They never released video or images of Bear's face, citing a desire to give him an entirely private childhood. Liam and Cheryl ended their relationship on 1 July 2018, after 2.5 years together.

Maya Henry

Liam dated American model Maya Henry from 2018 to 2022. Henry attended a meet and greet with One Direction in 2015 but stated she and Liam did not talk much. They reconnected again in 2018 at a fashion show. Some controversy ensued regarding their age difference. The pair announced their engagement in August 2020 but Henry later revealed they had been engaged since November 2019. The pair broke up in June 2021. Payne and Henry rekindled their relationship briefly in late 2021 but broke up again in April 2022. Henry wrote a fictional novel titled Looking Forward, released in May 2024, based on "true events" of her abusive relationship with a pop star. Controversy began to build surrounding the events depicted in the novel but were overshadowed by Payne's death in October. Henry released a statement in February 2025 saying "...while I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up. On drugs, he became someone unrecognizable, so different from his sober self" but also stated she "does not fault him for his struggles".

Controversies

Alleged Homophobia

Liam received backlash over several seemingly homophobic comments, though he consistently denied an anti-LGBT stance. In 2014, Payne went to openly homophobic reality TV family the Robertsons, from US reality TV show Duck Dynasty, commending them for their "family values". Many speculated this was agreement with the family's homophobic and racist stance. Payne reacted angrily to the backlash saying "Being a fan of someone's show and the way they still hold a family together doesn't mean i am ok with all they say. I can’t do anything without being judged, you try that and write about it. What I gotta do to please you bastards I’m a 20 year old, just living life as you did when u were twenty but in extraordinary circumstances. Sick of all this bull, I'll be back again when the freedom of speech law is back and people don’t believe to much into the bulls#!t they read."[17] He was also criticized for being photographed with the family while holding a rifle.

Later that year, Liam denied rumors he appeared in a gay sex tape, stating "I think I'd rather say a full frontal than have people look at that." Some assumed the comment to be homophobic and Liam responded "I'm 100% not homophobic but I'm also 100% not gay. But when somebody says I am, I'm gunna say I'm not, which does not make me a homophobe".

In a 2015 interview with Attitude Magazine, a publication for gay men, Liam angered fans when he assumed the displaying of any rainbow flags/signs at One Direction concerts was showing support for the conspiracy theory of Larry Stylinson, a fan-rumored closeted relationship between Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. He claimed "When the law changed in the U.S. [legalizing same-sex marriage] there were loads of rainbow flags flying at our shows, but I think that was mainly because of the Louis and Harry thing [that they're secret lovers], which is absolutely nuts and drives me insane[18]". While some fans had in fact confirmed they bring pride flags to concerts in support of the Larry theory, Rainbow Direction, a fan based organization designed to create safe spaces at concerts for LGBT fans, released a statement of clarification, saying "Since a large part of the rainbows present at each show are brought by Rainbow Direction participants, we want to remind Liam, and Attitude Magazine - which previously reported on the campaign - of their actual purpose. Rainbow Direction decided to encourage people to make their support for fellow fans of all sexualities and gender identities visible by bringing rainbows in all forms to the shows. The aim is to show fans of all sexualities and gender identities that the 1D community welcomes them. As stated on the official website, Rainbow Direction’s actions aren’t directed to any band member, but to fellow fans."[19] Fans online expressed some confusion about Payne's comments, after witnessing him at previous concerts encouraging fans with rainbow signs/flags to hold them up and be "proud". Styles would also encourage the flags and sometimes held them up himself.

Since these incidents, Liam shown clear support for the LGBT+ community. In 2016, he expressed condolences on Instagram after the Orlando mass shooting at an LGBT+ nightclub. In 2017, he condemned President Donald Trump's decision to ban transgender people from serving in the US military.

In 2019, Liam caused controversy when he confirmed he was dating 19-year-old Maya Henry, 7 years younger than him (26, at the time). Liam clarified that she was 19 when they began dating, which only sparked more criticism. The two first met when Henry was 15, at a meet and greet backstage with One Direction in 2015 and began dating in 2019.

When Liam's debut album was released, a track called "Both Ways" was heavily criticised online for allegedly fetishizing bisexual women. The song depicts Liam in a relationship with a woman, as they engage in threesomes with other women. Critics said it perpetuated the harmful idea that bisexuality in women is largely performative for the sexual gratification of straight men. The hashtag trend "#liampayneisoverparty" trended worldwide on December 7. He received criticism for jokingly commenting that he did not "understand" Harry Styles' gender defying fashion choices and wouldn't let him babysit his son because of how Harry might dress him. In 2020, Liam apologized for "Both Ways" lyrical content and said he would be moving his image away from the more sexually charged songs and persona he had projected during 2017-2019. He also addressed an ongoing battle with alcoholism.

Abuse Allegations

In May 2024, Maya Henry published a memoir Looking Forward[20] detailing her life during her relationship and engagement with Liam, using pseudonyms for those involved. In the book, Maya alleged that she endured both physical and emotional abuse from Liam[21], recounting several distressing incidents, including:

  • Chasing her around their home with an axe[22]
  • Striking walls next to her head
  • Shattering glass tables
  • Forcing her to have an abortion
  • Sending explicit photos to her family members
  • Cheating on her while under the influence of cocaine and other drugs
  • Threatening her by asserting that no one would believe her as his fanbase would always forgive and support him

In October 2024, Maya made additional allegations against Liam, claiming:

  • He manipulated One Direction fans into sending him explicit content of themselves in DMs
  • He continued to contact her from various numbers, creating new iCloud accounts to iMessage and email her while also bombarding her mother’s phone and trying to communicate with her friends
  • He attempted to flirt with Maya’s friends while he and Maya were still together, trying to invite them over when Maya was away
  • He attended Louis’ concert the day Maya’s book was released, knowing the attention would overshadow her allegations[23]

Henry was interviewed several times and made several TikTok videos where she claimed to have been abused by Payne, particularly when he was not sober. She implored Payne to stop "being silent" and address her claims, and addressed his fans in her comments section. She filed a cease and desist against Liam just days before his death.

Other Incidents

In early 2014, a picture of Liam standing on a roof ledge of a 34 story building was uploaded to a fan account dedicated to him. The photo showed the dangerous jump needed to get to the ledge. The photo was deleted the next day and Liam issued an apology stating "You may have seen a photo of me today taken on top of a building. I regret being there and having a photo taken. It was a stupid and irresponsible thing to do. I am sorry, and do not endorse any fans trying to repeat this, as it is extremely dangerous."[24]

In June 2022, Payne appeared on controversial influencer Logan Paul's podcast. During this interview, he made several claims about his time in One Direction and his solo career. Payne claimed the band was initially formed around himself and that his debut single Strip That Down was immensely successful upon release, gaining a billion streams. Despite these claims being factual, many online observers refused to believe it and criticised him for what they believed was unwarranted arrogance and self absorbtion. Payne also alluded to tension within the band, stating one member had thrown him against a wall and Payne had threatened to retaliate if he did not stop. He also criticised Zayn Malik for his then-recent domestic incident with Gigi Hadid's mother, but also clarified he knew Zayn had been through a lot in life and would still ultimately support him. Payne faced heavy backlash across several social media platforms in the aftermath of the interview and ultimately apologised for it.

In the weeks leading up to his death, many derogatory and mean-spirited videos were posted on social media about Payne, mocking everything from his dancing to declaring his attending Niall Horan's concert as "attention seeking" to higlighting old moments where he had supposedly annoyed his former bandmates. This online furor largely ceased when Payne died on 16 October 2024.

Tattoos

As of October 2017, Liam had 21 known tattoos.

  • "For the past five years now I've been part of something so special I don't think any of us really understand, something that can mean the world to people and put a smile on the face of our fans even in the darkest times. To a lot of people it's just a bunch of silly kids in a band but to the people involved it means so much more." (After Zayn's departure from the band)
  • "It’s not something that we were given. It’s something we worked our asses off for. The way we went to work every day and the way we travelled the world and the way we conducted our business, with great management at the time and greater minds, it turned out great for everybody. But it was a long five years." (On being in the band and his subsequent financial worth, Rollacoaster Magazine 2017)
  • "I stopped smoking, that’s the best thing ever. Honestly, anyone out there who’s trying to stop smoking, just do it, honestly. I just did cold turkey, I knew my son was coming, and I was like, I’m not gonna be smoking with my son, that’s not right. My life’s not my own anymore, now, it’s not mine to decide, so smoking had to go." (KISSFM interview, 2017)
  • "I didn't get any Dad's socks yet, though but I'm going to speak to my son in a little bit, which I'm really excited about. Bless him. He's getting so big now. He's a big boy. And he looks like a mini me. As if we needed any more me in the world." (Last words)
