Harry Styles, Kid Harpoon, Tyler Johnson
Lyrically, the song addresses self realisation, empowerment and dealing with fame.
Some have speculated it may be a "coming out anthem" due to the music video featuring Styles in an orgy of men and women, and due to the song's release on National Coming Out Day.
Styles has not yet elaborated on the production or meaning of the song, but has been working on his second album since 2018, recording in Tokyo, London and the United States.
"Lights Up" was briefly promoted prior to release via several viral campaigns. Large black posters asking "Do you know who you are?" were distributed worldwide. A fan noticed Styles record label and Treat People With Kindness branding on the poster which sparked online speculation that new music was imminent. The question was eventually revealed as a lyric within the song. Harry also cryptically tweeted "Do" in the days before release. A website run by Style's label allowed users to enter their names and receive a customised compliment from Harry.
Streaming platforms notified fans of the single's imminent release mere hours before, via pop up messages asking them if they were ready.
The single and music video were released simultaneously.
"Lights Up" debuted at #3 in the United Kingdom and #17 in the United States. It debuted in the top 10 in Australia, Ireland, Greece, Estonia, New Zealand and Scotland.
